Denis Lanoue - "Community Services"

Presentation to the Community Consultation Meeting - January 22, 2009

COMMUNITY SERVICES

My name is Denis Lanoue. I am the President of the Heathwood Ratepayers Association. I represent
1400 single home residences located in the area between Steeles & Mc Nicholl and Kennedy &
Birchmount. I am an active member of the area revitalization study and I will offer comments in
the areas of Community Services and Hydro Electricity.

When we moved in Scarborough more than 25 years ago, our area was a vibrant suburb of Toronto.
Our family had easy access to a full range of Community services. Over the years, the population
has grown and we are now in a situation where our Community Services are scarce and difficult to access.

Needless to say that my antennas went up, when I heard that 8 condo towers were going to be
parachuted in the parking lot of Bridlewood Mall. I saw this development as putting further stress
on our already stressed Community Services.

The fact of the matter is that our Library at Bridlewood Mall is way too small and is in need of a
major expansion to better serve our Community.

The swimming pools are fully utilized and are refusing residents in need of swimming classes.

Our arena at Leacock was closed 3 years ago and we no longer have an ice ring to serve the Community.

Our soccer fields and baseball fields are very hard to reserve because they are fully utilized.
We need additional fields.

Our Community Centers at Leacock and L’Amoreaux are overcrowded and in need of expansion to accommodate
our seniors and youth population. We need more access to Parks and Gymnasiums where our youth
population will enroll in sport activities rather than gang activities.

United Way has now identified our Steeles L’Amoreaux Community as a Priority Community in need of a
Community Hub. They have ear marked $1M to help our community with other partners yet to come forward.

A development bringing 4 to 5000 people in our area has to contribute significantly to improving the
quantity and quality of Community services available for the present and future residents.

I would like, the Developer, City Planning, our City councillors and our Mayor to make sure that the
development costs of the Bridlewood mall project be assigned to improving these Community services
for the local tax payers.
