Background:
ATTENTION all residents of the Steeles-L'Amoreaux neighbourhood! Your community is about to change significantly - are you aware of these changes? Please read on.
Malibu Investments Inc. is planning to redevelop Bridlewood Mall to include a Super-High Density residential development with 1370 new housing units on the 9.4 hectare site. That will mean over 4000 new residents in a small area. The mall will continue to exist.
Steeles-L'Amoreaux has already been designated a "Priority Neighbourhood" by the City of Toronto and the United Way. This means that we are already under-served by social services. Does adding 4000 new people to this situation make sense to you?
RESULTS?
- A greater dependence on cars as people drive out of the area to attain services.
- An increase in wait times at the local hospital and for other services.
- Overcrowded schools and a resulting decrease in the quality of education.
- An increased burden on student/youth support systems leading to an increase in youth crime and other social problems.
HOW DO WE KNOW?
- We are simply repeating the same old mistakes of the past - a history of unbalanced and ill-conceived development can be seen in the Jane-Finch neighbourhood - developed in the 1960s as a model suburb, but neglected the government.
- Don't let this happen to us. Take action now! Write a letter to your Mayor, your City Councilor, you MPP or the local press.
ABOUT US:
- We are a community organization formed to provide input into the proposed redevelopment plan for Bridlewood Mall at Warden and Finch in Scarborough.
- We oppose the CURRENT Bridlewood Mall Redevelopment Plan. We feel that the proposed density (1370 new units) and height (the highest building is 38 stories) of the plan are too great and fail to meet the needs of the community.
Statement of Principles:
- We support responsible development. All development must respond to the strengths, needs, and the limitations of the community in which it occurs.
- We support sustainable development. No development should exceed the capacity of the community or of the environment to sustain it.
- We believe that the community has a right to be consulted regarding any proposed development that will significantly affect our quality of life.
- We are a community advocacy group.
We will update regularly with new information.
